International Grade Conversion Guide
Compare grading systems across countries and convert grades between US, Italian, German, UK, and other scales
Comparing Grading Systems
Different countries use very different grading scales, which can make comparing academic performance confusing. Here is how the same level of achievement is expressed across major systems: • 80% (good performance): US Letter: B− · 4.0 GPA: 2.7 Italian School: 8/10 (Buono) · Italian University: 24/30 German: 2.3 (Gut) · UK: Upper Second (2:1) The Grade Calculator includes 11 built-in scales, so you can switch between them instantly to see how a percentage maps to each system.
Converting Between Scales
The percentage is the universal bridge between grading systems. To convert a grade from one scale to another: 1. Find the percentage equivalent of the original grade 2. Look up that percentage on the target scale For example, to convert Italian 8/10 to US Letter: • Italian 8/10 corresponds to 80% • 80% on US Letter scale = B− Or to convert US B+ to German scale: • US B+ = approximately 87% • 87% on German scale = 1.7 (Sehr gut) The Grade Calculator does this automatically — enter a score in Score/Total mode and switch between scales to see the equivalent grade on each.
Regional Passing Thresholds
One of the biggest differences between grading systems is where they set the passing threshold. The same percentage can mean "pass" in one country and "fail" in another: • United States: 60% is the typical passing threshold (D grade) • Italy: 60% = 6/10 (Sufficiente) — passes · At university: 60% = 18/30 — minimum pass • Germany: 50% = 4.0 (Ausreichend) — the minimum passing grade • United Kingdom: 40% = Third Class Honours — the lowest passing classification • France: 50% = 10/20 — the standard passing mark This means a student scoring 55% would pass in Germany, UK, and France, but would fail in the United States under many grading policies. Always consider the local context when comparing grades across borders.
