The Science of Calendars and Leap Years
The Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, corrected the Julian calendar's overestimation of the solar year. The Julian calendar (established by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE) assumed a year was exactly 365.25 days, adding a leap day every four years. The actual solar year is approximately 365.2422 days — 11 minutes shorter. Over centuries, this tiny error accumulated: by 1582, the calendar was 10 days out of alignment with astronomical seasons. Gregory's reform dropped 10 days (October 4 was followed by October 15) and refined the leap year rule. The new rule — leap years every 4 years, except centuries not divisible by 400 — produces an average year length of 365.2425 days, accurate to within 1 day every 3,236 years. Different cultures use different calendars: the Hebrew calendar is lunisolar with months of 29–30 days, the Islamic calendar is purely lunar with 354-day years, and the Ethiopian calendar has 13 months. The Chinese calendar combines solar and lunar cycles. Age calculation conventions also vary culturally — in East Asian age reckoning, a baby is considered one year old at birth.
Methodology
The calculator uses JavaScript's Date API with manual year/month/day arithmetic for accuracy beyond simple day counting. Years are counted by advancing the birth year until adding another year would exceed the target date. Months are then counted similarly. The remaining days complete the calculation. This approach matches how humans naturally calculate age — "I was born March 15, 1990, and today is February 18, 2026, so I am 35 years and 11 months old with 3 days remaining." The weeks/days/hours/minutes/seconds breakdown converts the total duration to its components. Leap year detection uses the rule: divisible by 4, except centuries (divisible by 100) unless also divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. The next birthday countdown calculates days remaining to the user's next anniversary date.

Example: If you were born on January 15, 1990, and today is March 20, 2024, you would be 34 years, 2 months, and 5 days old. Your next birthday would be in 301 days, and you would have lived approximately 12,483 days, or about 299,592 hours. In weeks, that is roughly 1,783 weeks — out of an average lifetime of about 4,160 weeks. Your approximate heartbeat count would be around 1.25 billion, and you would have taken roughly 274 million breaths. Another example: if you were born on February 29, 2000 (a leap year), on March 1, 2023 (a non-leap year), you would be 23 years and 1 day old. The calculator rolls your February 29 birthday to February 28 in non-leap years, so on February 28, 2023, you would have been exactly 23 years old.
Tips for Age Calculations
For legal purposes, most jurisdictions consider you to have reached a specific age on the anniversary of your birthdate, regardless of the time of day you were born. Leap year babies (February 29) legally age on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction — most countries use March 1. When calculating age differences between two people, subtract the younger person's birthdate from the older person's for precise results. For historical dates before the Gregorian calendar adoption (1582 in Catholic countries, 1752 in Britain), age calculations may differ by several days due to the Julian-Gregorian calendar switch. Some countries (notably South Korea, which reformed in 2023) have traditionally used different age counting systems that made people one or two years older than their international age.
