What is 1000 Hz?
1000 Hz (1 kHz) is the most widely used reference frequency in audio testing and calibration. It sits in the middle of the human hearing range where our ears are most sensitive. This frequency is used globally for audio equipment calibration, hearing tests, broadcast standards, and as the 'bleep' tone for censoring content.
Why 1000 Hz is Special in Acoustics
Human hearing sensitivity peaks between 1 and 4 kHz, as demonstrated by the Fletcher-Munson curves first measured in 1933. At 1000 Hz, the ear's sensitivity serves as the reference level: by definition, 1 phon equals 1 dB SPL at 1000 Hz. The ISO 226:2003 equal-loudness contours are all anchored at 1000 Hz, where phon values equal dB SPL values.
This makes 1000 Hz uniquely useful for audio measurement. When you calibrate an SPL meter, you use a 1000 Hz tone. When you specify the frequency response of headphones, the level at 1000 Hz is the baseline. It is the universal anchor point for sound level comparisons.
1000 Hz in Audio Engineering
In professional audio, 1000 Hz is the standard alignment tone. Recording studios place a 1 kHz tone at the head of tapes and digital sessions to calibrate playback levels. The SMPTE standard reference level uses a 1 kHz tone at +4 dBu (or −20 dBFS in digital systems).
Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) measurements use 1 kHz as the fundamental test frequency. An amplifier's distortion specification (e.g., "0.01% THD") is typically measured at 1 kHz. Frequency response charts for speakers and headphones often use 1 kHz as the 0 dB reference point.
1000 Hz in Broadcasting and Telecommunications
The familiar "bleep" censoring profanity on television is a 1000 Hz sine wave. This frequency was chosen because it effectively masks speech while being distinct enough not to be confused with program audio. The U.S. Emergency Alert System (EAS) uses a dual-tone attention signal combining 853 Hz and 960 Hz to alert the public to emergencies.
In telecommunications, the milliwatt test tone (1004 Hz in North America, 1000 Hz elsewhere) is used to measure line levels and signal loss across telephone networks. This tone has been used since the early days of telephony to ensure consistent audio quality across long-distance connections.
1000 Hz in Hearing Tests
Clinical audiometry tests hearing thresholds at standard frequencies: 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 Hz. The 1000 Hz test point is often the starting frequency because most people hear it easily and it provides a reliable baseline. Tympanometry (middle ear testing) traditionally uses a 226 Hz probe tone, but high-frequency tympanometry at 1000 Hz is preferred for infants because their ear canal acoustics differ from adults.
