What is 432 Hz?
432 Hz is an alternative tuning standard where the note A above middle C (A4) is set to 432 vibrations per second instead of the modern standard of 440 Hz. This pitch sits about 31 cents (roughly one-third of a semitone) lower than A440, producing a subtly warmer, darker tone. The History of 432 Hz Tuning
Before international standardization, orchestral pitch varied widely across Europe, ranging from roughly 392 Hz in French Baroque ensembles to over 450 Hz in some 19th-century concert halls. In 1859, France adopted A=435 Hz as the 'diapason normal,' and this became the dominant European reference for decades.
The Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi supported the French standard of 435 Hz to protect singers from the strain of ever-rising pitch. In an 1884 letter to the Italian Music Commission, he also noted that 432 Hz would be acceptable 'for mathematical exigencies,' since the difference from 435 Hz was 'almost imperceptible to the ear.' An Italian decree that year established A=432 for military bands, though this was never widely adopted internationally.
In May 1939, an international conference at BBC Broadcasting House in London recommended A=440 Hz as a compromise between various national standards. This recommendation was formally adopted by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 16:1975, where it remains the standard today. The term 'Verdi tuning' for 432 Hz was later popularized in 1988 by the Schiller Institute, though Verdi himself primarily advocated for 435 Hz.
432 Hz vs 440 Hz: What's the Difference?
The difference between 432 Hz and 440 Hz is 8 Hz — about 31 cents, or roughly one-third of a semitone. While small, most listeners can hear the difference when switching directly between them. Music tuned to 432 Hz sounds slightly lower and is often described as warmer or more mellow, while 440 Hz sounds brighter and slightly more tense.

What Does the Science Say?
A small number of peer-reviewed studies have compared the physiological effects of 432 Hz and 440 Hz music. The audible difference is real, and some listeners may genuinely prefer the aesthetic quality of one over the other, but claims of healing properties or spiritual effects are not supported by current scientific evidence.
The Mathematical Argument
Proponents of 432 Hz often cite its connection to 'scientific pitch,' a system proposed by French physicist Joseph Sauveur in 1713 that sets middle C (C4) to 256 Hz — a power of 2 (2 to the power of 8). In this system, all octaves of C become exact powers of 2 (C0=1 Hz, C1=2 Hz, C3=128 Hz, C4=256 Hz, C5=512 Hz). Applying Pythagorean tuning ratios to C=256 yields A=432 Hz.
While the mathematics is correct, these properties depend on our particular definition of 'one second' — an arbitrary unit derived from the quantum properties of caesium-133 atoms. Had civilizations defined time divisions differently, the same physical pitch would correspond to different numbers. The mathematical elegance is real, but it does not make 432 Hz more 'natural' than any other frequency in an absolute sense.
