Burst Mode & Envelopes

Generate repeated tone bursts with customizable envelopes for testing and timing

Try Burst Mode

1 kHz tone, 100ms duration, 500ms interval

What is Burst Mode?

Burst mode plays short tone pulses with controlled duration and spacing. Each burst can be shaped by an envelope to control how the sound fades in and out.

  • Audiometry and hearing threshold testing
  • Reaction time and reflex testing
  • Click-free audio system testing
Burst Anatomy
Duration, interval, and envelope shape of a tone burst

Burst Controls

The burst panel provides precise control over each tone pulse:

  • Frequency: The tone frequency for each burst (20-20000 Hz)
  • Burst Duration: How long each burst plays (10-5000 ms)
  • Interval: Time between bursts (0-10000 ms)
  • Envelope Shape: How the burst fades in and out
  • Repeat Count: Number of bursts to play (1-20)

Envelope Shapes

Different envelope shapes control how abruptly or smoothly the burst starts and ends:

Envelope Shapes Comparison
Different shapes provide different trade-offs between spectral purity and time precision
Shape Character Best For
Hann Smooth, click-free Professional audio testing
Sine Very smooth transitions Psychoacoustic research
Rectangle Abrupt on/off, may click Timing signals, triggers
Blackman Ultra-smooth, minimal sidebands Spectral analysis, precision
Avoiding Clicks: Use Hann or Blackman envelopes for click-free bursts. Rectangle envelopes may produce audible clicks at start and end.

Applications

Hearing Threshold Test

Use repeated bursts to find the quietest level at which you can hear a frequency.

Try Hearing Test

Reflex Testing

Random interval bursts test reaction time and acoustic startle reflex.

Try Reflex Test

Timing Signal

Use precise bursts as timing markers for audio/video synchronization.
