What is Modulation?
Modulation varies one property of a sound wave using another wave. The main tone is called the carrier, and the wave that changes it is called the modulator.
- AM (Amplitude Modulation): Changes the volume of the carrier wave, creating tremolo effects
- FM (Frequency Modulation): Changes the pitch of the carrier wave, creating vibrato and warble effects
Modulation Controls
The modulation panel provides control over both the carrier and modulator:
- Modulation Type: Choose AM (tremolo) or FM (vibrato/warble)
- Carrier Frequency: The main tone frequency (20-20000 Hz)
- Modulator Rate: How fast the modulation occurs (0.1-100 Hz)
- Modulation Depth: How much the modulation affects the sound (0-100%)
- Waveforms: Select waveforms for both carrier and modulator
Amplitude Modulation (Tremolo)
AM varies the volume of the carrier wave. At slow rates (1-5 Hz), this creates a tremolo effect. At faster rates, it creates more complex timbres.

Frequency Modulation (Vibrato)
FM varies the pitch of the carrier wave. At slow rates with low depth, this creates vibrato. Higher depths create more dramatic pitch sweeps.
Vibrato Tip: For natural-sounding vibrato, use 5-7 Hz rate with 10-20% depth.
