What Is a Hearing Range Test?

A hearing range test measures which frequencies you can perceive across the human audible spectrum (20 Hz – 20,000 Hz). Most adults cannot hear the full range — high-frequency sensitivity declines naturally with age due to presbycusis. Your personal upper limit depends on age, cumulative noise exposure, and individual biology.

Typical Hearing Ranges by Age

Approximate upper-frequency limits based on population averages (individual results vary):

  • Children (under 12): up to ~20,000 Hz
  • Teenagers (13–19): up to ~17,000–18,000 Hz
  • Young adults (25–35): up to ~15,000–16,000 Hz
  • Adults (50+): up to ~12,000 Hz

Why Does Hearing Range Decrease With Age?

Presbycusis results from gradual damage to hair cells in the cochlea, particularly those responsible for high frequencies. These cells do not regenerate. High frequencies are affected first because the hair cells at the base of the cochlea — which detect them — are more vulnerable to cumulative wear from noise exposure and reduced blood supply.
