Fixed-pitch instruments like pianos are typically tuned to whatever standard the orchestra uses. When performing with a piano tuned to 442 Hz, the entire ensemble must match that pitch. 442 Hz vs 440 Hz: Can You Hear the Difference?

The difference between 440 Hz and 442 Hz is approximately 7.85 cents (a cent is 1/100th of a semitone). Most listeners cannot distinguish individual tones this close in pitch, but when instruments play together, the cumulative effect of tuning 2 Hz higher becomes noticeable — the overall sound has a slightly brighter, more resonant quality.

The Science Behind the Pitch
