What Are Binaural Beats?

A binaural beat is an auditory illusion that occurs when you hear two slightly different frequencies in separate ears through headphones. Your brain perceives a third tone — the binaural beat — at a frequency equal to the difference between the two tones. For example, 200 Hz in one ear and 210 Hz in the other produces a perceived 10 Hz beat. This phenomenon was first described by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839 and popularized by Gerald Oster's 1973 paper in Scientific American.

Proponents of binaural beats target specific frequency bands associated with different mental states:

  • Delta (1–4 Hz): Associated with deep sleep

What Does the Science Say?

Research on binaural beats is active but inconclusive. A 2023 systematic review by Ingendoh et al. (PLOS ONE) examined 14 qualifying studies on brainwave entrainment and found that 8 showed no significant effect. The review concluded that evidence for binaural-beat-induced entrainment is 'mixed at best.'

Some individual studies report subjective benefits such as reduced anxiety or improved focus, but methodological issues (small sample sizes, lack of blinding, inconsistent protocols) limit firm conclusions. Binaural beats are generally considered safe and may serve as a useful relaxation tool, but they should not be viewed as a proven therapeutic intervention.
