What Are Isochronal Tones?

Isochronal tones are evenly spaced pulses of a single tone that turn on and off at a regular rate. Unlike binaural beats, which require two different frequencies in separate ears, isochronal tones produce their rhythmic effect with a single speaker or headphone channel. The pulse rate determines the target brainwave frequency — for example, a tone pulsing 10 times per second targets the 10 Hz alpha band.

Isochronal Tones vs. Binaural Beats

Both methods aim to encourage brainwave activity at a target frequency, but they work differently:

  • Binaural beats: Two tones at slightly different frequencies played in separate ears (requires headphones). The brain perceives the frequency difference as a pulsation.
  • Isochronal tones: A single tone switched on and off at the target rate (works with any audio setup). The rhythmic amplitude change is the entrainment stimulus.

Brainwave Frequency Targets

Set the pulse rate to target different brainwave bands:

  • Delta (1–4 Hz): Deep sleep — use 2–4 pulses per second
  • Theta (4–8 Hz): Meditation, drowsiness — use 5–7 pulses per second
  • Alpha (8–13 Hz): Relaxation — use 10 pulses per second
  • Beta (13–30 Hz): Focus, alertness — use 15–20 pulses per second

What Does the Science Say?

Isochronal tones are a form of auditory driving (or auditory entrainment). Some proponents claim they produce stronger entrainment than binaural beats because the amplitude changes are more pronounced. However, this claim rests on limited evidence — primarily early studies from the 1980s with small sample sizes.

Research on auditory entrainment in general is mixed. While some EEG studies show frequency-following responses to rhythmic stimuli, the practical cognitive or wellness benefits remain unproven. Isochronal tones are safe for most people but should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. People with epilepsy should consult a doctor before using rhythmic audio stimulation.

How to Create Isochronal Tones

Use the tone generator's Pulse mode. Set the carrier frequency (e.g., 200 Hz), then set the pulse rate to your target brainwave frequency (e.g., 10 Hz for alpha). Adjust the duty cycle to control how long each pulse lasts — 50% is standard, but shorter duty cycles produce a more staccato effect.
