What is DTMF?
DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) is the signaling system used by touch-tone telephones. Each key on a telephone keypad generates two simultaneous sine wave tones — one from a low-frequency group (697-941 Hz) and one from a high-frequency group (1209-1633 Hz). This dual-tone approach was chosen because it is extremely unlikely for any single environmental sound to accidentally produce the exact combination of two specific frequencies at the required levels. The system was developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories and introduced commercially in 1963 under the AT&T trademark 'Touch-Tone.'

The A, B, C, D keys are part of the full DTMF standard (ITU-T Q.23) but are not present on standard consumer telephones. They are used in military, radio, and specialized telecommunications equipment.
Brief History
DTMF was developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories (the research arm of AT&T) as a faster, more reliable replacement for rotary pulse dialing. The first Touch-Tone telephones were made commercially available on November 18, 1963, in Carnegie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The keypad layout (1-2-3 on top, unlike calculators which have 7-8-9 on top) was designed by psychologist John E. Karlin based on human factors research at Bell Labs. DTMF remains in active use today, including in modern VoIP systems where it is transported via RFC 4733.
How to Generate DTMF Tones
You can recreate any DTMF tone using the Dual Oscillator mode:
- Switch to Dual Oscillator mode in the tone generator
- Set both waveforms to Sine for authentic DTMF tones
- Enter the row frequency for Oscillator 1 and the column frequency for Oscillator 2 from the table above
Modern Uses of DTMF
- Navigating IVR (Interactive Voice Response) phone menus — 'press 1 for sales'
- Entering PINs, account numbers, and passcodes over the phone
- Amateur radio (ham radio) repeater access and control
- VoIP systems — DTMF is transported digitally via RFC 4733 in modern networks
